ELLSWORTH – The Ellsworth Public Library has deployed Neighborhood Libraries in
three rural communities: Surry, Lamoine, and Hancock. The boxes represent the library’s
commitment to overcoming geographic barriers that hinder access to library services in rural
areas. The initiative stems from the library’s mission to serve as a vital hub of learning and
inspiration for the residents of Ellsworth and its surrounding areas. These are the locations: Surry (Gatherings), Hancock (Hancock Community Center), and Lamoine (Town Hall).

“We recognize that the rural nature of Hancock County presents challenges for many residents
to access library resources,” says Gene Pellerano, President of the Friends of the Ellsworth Public
Library. “Through the introduction of Neighborhood Libraries, we aim to break down these
barriers and demonstrate our unwavering commitment to supporting the pursuit of knowledge in
all communities we serve.”

This initiative is part of the Ellsworth Public Library’s county-wide “Your Library, Your Journey:
Connecting Communities” effort. Through a variety of activities and strategic partnerships
throughout the year, the library aims to reach communities where they are. This initiative aligns
with the library’s mission to serve as a vital hub of learning and inspiration for the residents of
Ellsworth and its surrounding communities in Hancock County. The Ellsworth Public Library
reaffirms its dedication to being the cornerstone of the entire community and is committed to
breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone has access to its resources.”

The Neighborhood Libraries were made possible through a grant provided by the Bangor
Savings Bank Foundation and a volunteer woodworker from Surry. This grant allowed the library
to construct the book boxes and purchase new release titles for each library. Thank you, Tom, of
Surry and Bangor Savings Bank!

The Ellsworth Public Library is a vibrant community institution dedicated to enriching the lives of
residents in Ellsworth and its surrounding areas. The historic Tisdale House has been home to the

print books, audiobooks, movies, music CDs, and its growing Library of Things. In 2023, the library
ran a total of 470 programs for all ages. Patrons have access to over 8 million items from 63
libraries statewide as well as subscriptions to 50 print publications and online access to streaming
and download services as well as to the New York Times. An EPL library card also gives its holder
access to free passes to many renowned Down East museums. http://www.ellsworth.lib.me.us/
