Two small Islands off mid-coast Maine, the home to lobstermen and boat builders for generations, are now like so many small communities, dying in the aftermath of the closing of the lobster fisheries in the area. A yacht is found floating between the islands with seven dead bodies, two of whom are rival candidates for the Senate. Israel Pike, a recent parolee after fifteen years in prison for killing his abusive father, finds the bodies. His father’s brother is the local deputy sheriff with an axe to grind on Israel and questionable business dealings. Add into the mix two women, victims of human trafficking, who were on the ship and are now missing, and an eleven-year-old boy whose mother left him with a drunken abusive father. The boy’s only escape from his father’s drunken rages is hiding in one of the other cottages on their tiny island where he finds one of the missing women hiding out from the killers. But who are the bad guys and who are the good guys?
Michael Koryta is a master at suspense and this book is no exception. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing until the very end.
